I love looking through gift guides for the coming holidays but I think the best way to shop would be to support local businesses. Now this gift guide will be for shopping locally in Newfoundland because I know that province and also all the amazing businesses that I think would make excellent gifts. I love that little province and supporting any and all businesses would be great so maybe this Christmas you could put a smile on a business owner and also the person you are buying the gift for. I’m going to list all of my ideas for everyone. From book readers, to fashion friends to art lovers. I think I will cover everything and hopefully give you the best ideas that ever existed for Christmas!
Alright let’s dive right in folks!
These are all my top picks, in no particular order and all for different purposes. I will fully explain throughout each place the gift idea and who I think would love it. Hope it helps and that you enjoy shopping locally because I know these people would absolutely love any support they receive.
First up is Fogtown, with this place while it is a barbershop, they also sell some really cool clothes. The idea could be a gift card for your boyfriend, father or brother to go and get his hair cut or even a really nice close shave which would be same as giving a nice spa day to your mother. That’s one option for Fogtown but what I think would be a better option is buying from their side shop. Maybe a cute hoodie for literally anyone on your list. Same can be said for any of their shirts. But one of my favourite gift ideas for anyone who absolutely adores Newfoundland is the classic Newfoundland Island Print that we have displayed in our living room. Honestly we got ours put on backing from Costco and we adore how it brings us home. Would be super lovely for maybe a friend who moved away but still loves having a little bit of NL around. Here is a link to their website for a little look see!
Now for the ladies in your life, who are amazing I have so many options for you. I think my fave would be supporting Daniela Fougere Jewelry, she has got it all. A necklace for your best friend, maybe a ring for your mom. Her insta is @danielafougerejewelry and if you wanted to shop locally you can find her at Unicornio and Ethereal Boutique which are both found in Downtown St. John’s. Here are a few selections that I think would be perfect options.
Along the lines of shopping with your mom I would suggest looking through Whink, they are this beautiful store which has these amazing little trickets. They sell the tiny Newfoundland necklace I always wear. Which again would be a beautiful gift maybe for your girlfriend or best friend. But what I love is if you have literally no clue what to buy for someone, like you have completely run out of ideas, Whink is where you should go. I promise you, you will find something there. Whether it’s jewelry or maybe a cute ornament for her Christmas tree, maybe some wine glasses or even books. I think it’s a brilliant place to visit when it comes to trying to decide for someone you can’t quite figure out!
Now this is one of my favourite options for literally anyone. If you want something beautiful displayed in your house or in someone else’s home this is what I think you should get. For LITERALLY anyone because let me tell you I’m in love with it all! Look through her website which is linked right here. I think she has amazing photography which would be so easily displayed throughout anyone’s house. She’s got it all photos from Newfoundland and even through her travels. I mean she is Epic in my opinion and so are her photos! karaokeefe.artfunnels.com/ is the website, go and check it out!
Clothes are always a good option and let me tell you shopping for clothes is pretty good in the local scene. Listed above we do have Fogtown but there are so many options beyond them. For instance a fave of mine, which I scroll through daily on either Insta or online is Ethereal Boutique. They have it all for a girl who loves to shop, the owner Megan Warren has such a beautifully curated selection of clothes and jewelry. For any girl in your life it would be a perfect option. Even a little gift card would be awesome to receive as a Christmas gift so that they can go pick out the perfect gift for themselves. Plus you can order online and then pick it up in store, it’s literally THAT easy. All I’m going to say on that matter.
If you have a fashionista on your list than I think the best place to visit it Sooley. They have such beautiful dresses, super warm sweaters made all locally. You can check out there website because she’s even started to bridal designs as well. The link is here, try it out.
Why are men so difficult to shop for, they always say “I’m so easy to shop for, I’d like anything you get me” then on actual Christmas when they open up their presents they are not 100% sold on whatever you bought them. Like the smallest detail is off, something you and I would have never noticed but they do. SO in order to beat them at that game try heading into Civic Duty for something completely sharp or maybe even Relic.
Let’s talk about beer, let’s talk about the booming beer industry in Newfoundland. I am very proud to say that a Brewery just opened literally down the street from where I lived for 26 years. It’s called the Landwash Brewery and it looks fantastic, if you are looking for vibes and in Mount Pearl, this is the spot to check out. Maybe you don’t enjoy giving people physical goods but more on the experience side, I think this is a place you should visit.
Along the same thread, a trip to the spa would be amazing, so you could try Spa at the Monastrey. My dad tried to buy this for my mother and bless her, she is not the type of woman who would ever enjoy a massage but maybe in your life you have someone who could handle that. I would die for a massage.
What about that person in your life who enjoys working on their fitness, or wants to start working more on their fitness! Well the coolest place that opened in Newfoundland is Bespoke Cycle. I think some classes where they can sweat out all the turkey and sweets from Christmas. Or just to have some fun and also sweet. Super cute idea and fun if you also bought yourself some classes so you could do friendship dates together. Future friendship dates during the colder months will make it through.
Cherry Lane Studios is a great for people with new places, a little home decor never hurt anyone for Christmas. They are these beautiful designed pieces of string on wood, nothing like I’ve ever seen. She does do originals if you want them, I suggest you just DM her if you want anything do originally and I know she is at a lot of local markets and to keep an eye on her.
If you couldn’t tell from this list I love shopping firstly and I love all of these amazing places. And I’ll be honest there are so many amazing companies that I just could have made this blog post literally the size of a book (maybe get them a book written by a Newfoundlander.) DO you see what I mean I am typing this and more and more ideas are coming to me. Next year I will do a full comprehensive list of every single idea for christmas gifts so that you can have the best selection of gift ideas.
I could go on and on and on about supporting locally and maybe it’s because I can see the passion all of these people put behind their business but I’ll just leave you with this. There is some real good shit made locally and I think you can find every gift you need to buy through someone in Newfoundland. Check out all markets that come up during Christmas, they have this year a Night Market which was thought up by Scout Style, which means you can shop from local vendors from clothes, to food to everything in between. I know Christmas is in 14 days, but there is still time to shop through locally. Enjoy this list for now and I hope you had some inspiration for gifts! Let me know which ones were helpful! Signing off
